Ernest Hemingway in Kansas City

Cousin Ruth’s house in Mission Hills, Kansas

Photo shows a sign saying 6435 Indian Lane next to a bridge over a little creek. Lots of snow around as photo was taken in winter. Hemingway's cousin Ruth lived in a house which is somewhere across this bridge and along a private road

This was about as close as I got to 6435 Indian Lane in Mission Hills, Kansas, the address at which Hemingway’s cousin Ruth White Lowry lived. As mentioned earlier, Hemingway and his second wife, Pauline, had decided to travel to Kansas City for the birth of their son, Patrick. While waiting for the birth, the couple stayed with Hemingway’s aunt Arabell at her home on the Northwest corner of 55th Street and State Line Road, also in Mission Hills. But unfortunately, Hemingway’s aunt wasn’t very keen on her nephew and so Ernest and Pauline spent a lot of time with his cousin, Ruth, as well. The house in which Ruth lived is just across the bridge in this photo but wasn’t visible without going up a private road, which I didn’t do. Even though my own mission of seeing the house didn’t succeed, it was fun to see Mission Hills, which looked beautiful in the freshly fallen snow.

Next … Hemingway Plaza (formerly The Riviera)
